Makers Cleaning Cloths: http://bit.ly/makersclean
We've made a few how to clean your washer and dryer videos in the past, but one thing we've never discussed (because frankly, I didn't know it existed), is how to clean your washer pump filter. So, in this video, I take you through exactly how to do this, along with some other deep cleaning methods you can use on your dryer.

We'd love to hear from you - say hello down below!
I bought a used washer and dryer and once I looked closer they were pretty grody. The tray holding detergent was caked on with crud and disgusting. It’s so easy to remove and clean. Mine took a while to get clean.
The gasket on the washer has some dark spots on that I’m afraid are mold. What do I use to clean it that won’t damage the seal?
We had a smell coming from our utility room so I looked up Melissa’s suggestion. We are in a rental and doubt this has ever been cleaned! I had to clean the tube with a coat hanger and got the sand and dirt out before the NASTY water came out. The smell we kept is now gone. So thanks! Again so disgusting!
The vent hose also needs to be cleaned and check the exit point outside the house too. AlwYs keep the walls and floor under your machines wiped down twice a year and keep the back if the machines and the louvered vents clean. Wipe down all hoses and electrical cords too.
Its funny because where I live it is state required to get the vent cleaned and certified annually. Not a fan of paying someone to come in, but it does make sure you have the dryer vent cleaned regularly.
A couple of questions I have pertaining to drying...How to keep the dryer balls (wool) from getting caught up in the clothes, particularly the fitted sheets. It can be so annoying. Also, how to keep sheets from forming into a big ball when I run the dryer. They don't dry evenly and I end wasting energy. I have a front loader dryer. Thanks for your tips. Great channel!
My daughter has run the dryer with her apron in it that still has her pen from work in the pocket. Now I have ink stains all over the inside of the dryer drum-never mind her clothes. What is the best way to get the ink off of the drum?
you forgot a very important step. replace the same amount of water in your pump before running the next cycle. it will damage the pump if you don't. just pour it into the drum and it will run down into the pump.
I have an issue with my black pants developing a white film on them if left in the closet for a while. So frustrating when you pull out a pair to wear and find that you now have to wash them again! I THINK it is a residue from detergent that might have a fabric softener in it. I used ECOS from Costco for years so I switched. The other day I pulled out 3 pairs of pants before finding a pair without the white film on them and am not sure if they were from the new detergent or the old. Does anyone have a clue what causes this? BTW, I hate my front loader - next one will definitely be a top loader.
lol. I am Eastern European and my US washer and dryer are like SF for me (still). They look like they are at least 20 years old, top load system (but no place to put detergent other than a little bleach pouring spot), it's that old that I could not even find an instructions manual and whenever I'm washing I prey for something not to go wrong! How the hell can they wash in just 15-20 minutes? Anywhere in Europe, most washing machines are smaller and need at least 1h -1h 30 minutes to wash anything! What can I do to understand my machines better? I always disinfect the washer with vinegar (on empty cycle) and in the dryer remove the lint, byt that's it😂 thanks for the tips, anyway!!
I ALWAYS HAVE CLEANED MY MACHINES EVERY TWO MONTHS OR SO... I RUN THEM EMPTY WITH BLEACH AND SOAP ON HOT WATER ALL THE TIME.. I HATE DIRTY MACHINES . THEN I LEAVE THE DOORS AND TOPS OPEN TO DRY OUT ONCE REALLY GOOD...
I did that filter part on my washing machine and it completely caused a problem in that area!
right after unlocking the hole I realized that I shouldn't do this because the lock was held with some sort of a seal to keep it in place and prevent water from spilling! the next wash the disaster happened, the machine is spilling water from the filter area even I made sure that it is locked tight!
I don't own enough clothes of each shade to separate my loads into whites, lights, or darks. If I did that, then my laundry would take forever because I'd be doing 3 small separate loads every time. It's doable, but it's so inconvenient that I always mix everything together. Now my whites are kinda grayish, but it's not terrible because I only have a couple white shirts. I like to keep it minimal. Any advice?
I found out about the about my washer filter when it became completely clod with dog hair. My washer came up with an alarm right in the middle of a wash cycle that it could no longer drain because the filter was clogged. I now make a monthly routine to clean it.
What to do if my machine doesn't have a "self-clean" type cycle? I have an older HE front loader. My biggest issues are: 1)lately stuff has not been smelling clean after some washes, so much that I'll wash multiple times, 2)hard water/detergent build up under and in the dispenser tray, and 3)mold in the rubber gasket that won't come off and my manual doesn't address how to fix this.
My biggest issue is that i live in an apartement that shares a laundryroom with all the other apartements in the building (normal situation in Sweden though) and NOONE seems to care about the cleaning! I have to start with cleaning everything berfore i can start with the actual laundry.
I haven’t ever had an issue with any front load washer. if use cold water for most of your laundry of course it will smell bad because your clothes aren’t getting clean and the detergent will be left behind. cold water should only ever be used for delicate clothes. Run a sanitize setting with your sheets or towels once a week your machine will never smell.
For the filter clean it out once a month and run a sanitized setting with a dishwasher tablet that is the best cleaner for a washing machine.
Wow. This video came just in time because my whites were coming out with dirt on them. And some loads of laundry were coming out a bit smelly, even though we use the proper amount of detergent. Never knew about the washer filter! Yikes! Mine has never been cleaned because I didn’t know it existed! I know what I’ll be doing, after this video! Leave it to Moms to find the things we miss! 😉
Hi Melissa! I'm a newbie to your channel and LOVE your videos! I wanted to let you know that my hubby, who usually does the laundry, doubted your "How to wash a plastic shower curtain" video. I told him to give it a try and what do you have to loose shpeel. Well It came out beautifully! He said "I stand corrected, it can be washed!" giving you kudos. I do have 2 questions for you though: 1) Where do you get the plastic colored tubs for your 2 "basket system" of decluttering and how big are they? 2). I've heard some essential oils are toxic to cats. Since I know you have at least one, Are the essential oils you promote safe for cats? Thanks in advance for your fun and informative videos.
I just now saw this video. I missed the sale :( I have a laundry conundrum... my boyfriend sweats a lot during his workouts. We don’t wash clothes everyday, so the odor builds up on this shirts. After a while, the stench just sticks on the clothes no matter how many times we wash them. Do you have a solution to keeping his cloths from permanently smelling?
We also have an LG front loader and from time to time I actually remove the dryer filter housing to get a deep clean. It’s really very easy and usually only 2 to 4 Phillips head screws. Once removed you have way more access to get the stuff that the brush won’t get, like coins, buttons paper, etc.
Love your videos you’ve found a subscriber in me.
Hey, we became home owner last year and it came with a washer and dryer. After some amateur sleuthing we became aware that the previous home inhabitants had owned a large furry pet and every time I completed the laundry it would acquire a new smell (like wet dog) even after “clearing” the washer and dryer. I could get the smell to go away for short periods of time but I still have not completely illuminated it. I suppose I have not been cleaning it well as I had thought.
Melissa! Off subject but looking for tips to close down summer cottages!!! Heard Bounce sheets keep mice away and cotton balls with peppermint oil. Questions like is it better to leave duvets and blankets maybe folded and left on bed or in trash bags? I would think trash bags might hold moisture and mold? Help! 🦋🦋🦋
Besides being a lot more maintenance, the front loader door could be in the way when left open. A washing machine door or lid should be left open when the machine is not in use so that the machine can dry out. Top loader open lid ? Not so much a problem. Maybe people who have a stinky washer don't know the lid/door needs left up or open between uses ! My mother always left hers open....so I always have, too, & in 48+ yrs have not ever had an odor problem in my washing machine.
Hi Melissa! My husband forgot his pen in his jeans so it went through the washer and dryer. The inside of the dryer has a blue stain and I feel like it transfers onto white clothes. How do I remove it??
Well, I did know the pump filter existed, but only because a friend cleaned hers out then didn't fully reengage the drain hose, next run of the machine resulted in a flood and the resulting need to replace the bamboo floors in her entire lower level which led to needing to replace all of the doors because the new materials used were not the same thickness. So just a word to the wise, make sure you reattach anything you detach during cleaning or servicing of your washer.
I need to know how to get fragrance smells out of clothes. We use free and clear products but our relatives used highly fragranced products, so it takes me 3 or 4 washings or more to get those fragrances out of my kids clothes when they go for a visit. Is there an easy way to remove strong fragrances? It's so strong my kids get headaches from it. I've added vinegar to the wash and I've tried baking soda, but it takes so many washes.
I always use my vacuum with the long narrow attachment and vacuum out all the dust in the lint trap area. Really gets it clean. I always keep the top of the washer open after use..airs out but also I toss laundry in until I have a full load. I must do two loads a day with my family.
Great video! As always!! 😍 I bought something called a lint lizard...its an attachment to your vaccum that gets inside the lint trap and all the way in..like right to the aluminum vent hose that goes out of your house! It was $20 at cvs like 6 or 7 years ago, and it was the best $20 i ever spent! Every few months I’ll use it to thoroughly clean out the lint.
