We love hearing your stories, seeing your messy/clean pics and answering your questions!
I think we mention baking soda in about 50% of our videos. The stuff is incredible. It's cheap, available in every grocery and drug store and has so many uses. It's fascinating stuff! It's great for three key functions from a cleaning standpoint: abrasion, deodorizing and whitening.
I could probably do a video on 10 uses for baking soda every week for the next 20 years and never once repeat myself...now do you understand how amazing this stuff really is?!
I also love it because it is safe enough to eat, in fact, it is found in many baking recipes. Therefore, I'm convinced that it is a household cleaning kit staple.
So in no particular order, here you go:
10 - remove scuff marks and crayon marks from a painted wall.
9 - battle the worst body odour with baking soda.
8 - clean and unclog a smelly sink drain.
7 - clean your tile grout. Our in-depth video on grout cleaning http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qS30FQCk8sk
6 - add abrasion to any cleaning product (especially a homemade one) - this puts other products like VIM and Comet to shame. Here's our video on making your own cleaning products http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQxkD3wqyxA
5 - deodorize your kitty litter box.
4 - clean your non-self cleaning oven. You don't need anything caustic!
3 - remove hair product build-up from your hair (hair clarifying treatment). Mind=blown.
2 - deodorize your carpets
1 - add to laundry to create an amazing laundry booster!
Have I convinced you to purchase an industrial drum of the stuff yet?

Laundry: it’s not a brightener. It’s used as a water softener. It brightens only because it reduces deposition of soap scum.
Also, baking soda won’t deodorize urine. Proof: add it to ammonia. Notice it’s ineffective. Both are bases. To neutralize ammonia (from decomposition of urea in urine) use vinegar (acetic acid).
Kitty litter is clay. Far far more effective than baking soda as an absorbent.
Hi just found your site, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it. I do have a question about using sprinkled bacon soda on carpet before vacuuming. According to two different vacuum cleaner repair places the reason my motors kept burning up on my machine was because i was vacuuming bacon soda. These each were fairly expensive machines and replacing the motors was pretty costly too? This was around 5 years ago, so I am wondering, since you have a proffessional cleaning business if you have experienced that issue. Maybe vacuumes are made better now days. I sure would love to use this tip again? Maybe, could you share what brand vacuum you use at home and proffessionally that has endure vacuuming bacon soda?
Use baking soda to clean dentures. It works better than most commercial iCal denture cleaners. Warning! If you are travelling and have your baking sod’s in a baggie be sure you label it! Security at the airport gave me some real funny looks wheN they held up mine to question! (I am 72)
Yay for baking soda I've been a long time fan but I have a question please. I ran out of my beloved baking soda! I and wanted to clean my bathtub with your suggestion of liquid dish soap and baking soda paste. Sooooo, I found a box of Arm & Hammer FRESH SCENTSATIONS Carpet Odor Eliminator that no longer is used (vacuum no no) so I tried it on the bath tub. Worked perfectly, smelled wonderful but now I wonder if it could cause harm me or anything else. What ya think? P.S. I have also used it on the top of the stove. Again, perfect.
I found this recipe for making my own laundry soap on pinterest. 1/2 cup baking soda, cover with hot tap water and dissolve , 1/2 cup washing powder, cover with hot tap water and dissolve, fill bucket to 2 gallon mark and add 3/4 cup castile soap. Add essential oils in whatever aroma you love and it costs pennies compared to the store bought. When I do a load...I always add a sprinkle more baking soda. Works wonders for odors. Im still not sure if theres any help though for boys clothes....LOL kidding.
I love the video. Sometimes, I buy a 2 lt Coke, add a cup of baking soda and half cup vinegar. Attach a spray nozzle and use it for up to two months, cheapest all purpose home cleaner! :-) Of course, thanks to Coca Cola for making such a wonderful house cleaning product :-P
Thank you so much for another fine helpful video: I especially appreciate your voice (not "perky"), your subtle humor and the always-clear way you explain what we need to know. However, the MUSIC is too loud. My 70-yr old ears are overwhelmed by it. Yes, I did indeed protect my ears while rockin' out to swing and disco and 70's great music. This too-loud music is an ongoing distraction --- and, I'm noticing more Comments about this concern from others. Keep up the great work.
My cleaning lady cleaned my oven with baking Soda and vinegar and it was a disaster.every time I cook all the soda goes into the food.i have tried to clean it myself and also paid someone else to clean it, but I am very sorry it was done with that in the first place
You are awesome!!!! Thank you for all the tips!!! I am superhappy with the information, I've already used some of them.
God bless u! The thing is , here in Poland we don't have superbig boxes of baking soda (0,5 kg as you have), only tiny bags of 30 g. That's a tiny problem. Another thing is I wonder if baking soda is the same what baking powder, can I use it interchangeably? Please, answer to the question, please!
I use Baking soda to clean my corroded Car battery terminals every so often. Use warm water and baking soda. Make a paste and put it on the car battery posts...let sit for ten minutes...or longer...use a battery post wire brush or a tooth brush or a small wire brush. Then rinse off with warm hot water...or use a purple spray bottle you always use, I call the "purple genie bottle" and spray off the baking soda with a clean towel...to not make a big mess. Most of all, use eye protection and gloves...always disconnect the black negative wire first on any car truck you have...it's good car maintenance...just give a shout out to me Peter Fox...thanks.
For ALCOHOLICS: Add 1-tsp baking soda to 1-cup warm water and add 1-tsp lemon OR lime juice, mix and drink(try to use REAL lemons or limes)!
DO THIS 24-HRS "BEFORE" ALCOHOL BINJIN' AND FIRST THING IN THE MORNING WHENEVER YOU WAKE UP "AFTER" THAT BINJIN!!
*This preps your internal organs before party.......than extracts the toxins after the party :)
Don't use baking soda on carpets! rent a carpet cleaner.
I tried the Arm & Hammer carpet deodorizer, it's baking soda with fragrance. It destroyed my Dyson DC 13. The A&H has satisfaction guarantee but the company refused to compensate, told me to call Fabreze which never replied . Dyson was under warranty, but they say it was not "normal use" to vacuum up baking soda. I lost few hundred dollars repairing it, it never perform like it used to.
i have Crystal soda and i dont need vinegar just the crystal soda its powerfull anof to clean it but the women in the video's has right i use soda the crystal one almost 2 weeks and its 1.000.000 times better then an brand product and cleaning the kitchen floor with soda i dint know it so yea it REALLY WORKS (y) perfect
10: Yes please! No expensive scuff cleaner needed!
9: I do this. Works like a charm.
8: Baking soda will deodorize the drain, but when you mix baking soda and vinegar what comes out is literally just salty water. It doesn't unclog a drain. If you want to unclog it, a biological enzyme cleaner is much more effective, and is good for grease buildup. You can also plunge it, or use a wire hanger with a hook on the end if it's a hair buildup.
7 & 6: I don't use it on my floor because it leaves a very noticeable and feel-able (is that a word?) buildup. If you do this on the floor (or anywhere else for that matter), MAKE SURE you get the buildup off.
5: This is one of the best cat litter tips I've ever been given! Guests never smell it anymore!
4: Leaves build-up, simply doesn't do anything for burnt on mess. Even Easy-Off took two hours of scrubbing to clean up the disgusting gunk on the oven after my partner and I moved in here. Also, baking soda and vinegar again don't do anything when put together except bubble and make salty water.
3: Don't do this, ever. It's waaaay too basic on the pH scale to be used anywhere on the skin. Your scalp will end up dry and scaly. Use vinegar ALONE instead, it's acidic. Your skin is naturally acidic. Believe me, your scalp will thank you.
2: I asked my vacuum company about this one and they said that baking soda's tiny powdery particles will clog and strip the vacuum's motor if it's used in high amounts. Try it at your own risk, but definitely do your research guys.
1: I haven't done research on this one.
That's five things that baking soda does NOT work for, three that it DOES work for, one that's unknown to me and one that you CAN do but it's not really effective at.
I just love your tips on cheap, nontoxic cleaning of virtually everything. Baking soda has always been a staple in my house. When my niece had stained teeth, I told her to brush with baking soda and the stains came right out!
hi! hello!! Madam Melissa, Thanks for the other tips as well. I think baking soda is going to be my go to cleaning products from now on. Looks like I wouldn't have to buy some many cleaning purpose cleaning products anymore.
