I am John Bond from Riverwinds Consulting and this is Publishing Defined. Today I have 13 tips for writing a great academic article or paper. First, let us start before any writing has occurred. Think about whether the effort is justified. Is the topic new and novel in the field? Is the article about a particularly timely topic in your area? Don’t just write an article because you can; rather look to make a difference. Second, think about where you want to submit the manuscript. Be a loyal reader of any journal you intend to submit to; do not just pick one out of an online search. Know the mission of the publication. This will allow you to focus your writing on that journal. Third, follow the instruction or guidelines for authors for that journal very closely, particularly in regard to length and format. Now, let us look at mechanics. The fourth tip is to follow closely the appropriate style manual. Whether the AMA, APA, Chicago style guides, or others, you will benefit by understanding these guidelines in your field. Fifth, short and concise is always better. This applies to the entire manuscript but also to sentence length and paragraph length as well. No one ever said, “I wish that paper was longer.” Ruthlessly delete all extraneous materials. Sixth, follow accepted practices in regard to grammar and style. If you do not know the expected practices find someone that does. Also, read the articles in the journals you are submitting to so you can understand the tone of these articles. Now, let us look at the content presentation. Seventh, when the paper is written, review the abstract very, very closely. Many people will read only the abstract and it needs to be flawless. Make sure it conforms to the abstract format in your intended publication. Eight, consider the article title very carefully. Avoid a boring title which is really just a label. Consider something thought provoking or maybe even provocative, but do not stray so far that it is corny or sensational. Ninth, make sure any tables, charts, images, or graphics are essential and created in a quality fashion. Does each item standalone by itself? Lastly, let us consider the review of the manuscript before submission. My tenth tip is to read the final manuscript aloud several times. This helps for clarity and language. Eleventh, aside from having the content reviewed by your peers before submission, have others outside your field read the paper as well. Listen closely to any suggestions they have. Twelfth, avoid any hint of plagiarism. Always cite your sources. Never take any passage or ideas from others. An error here can affect your career or reputation. Finally, I know many people that watch these videos are non-English language speakers that may be submitting to an English language journal. If so, I suggest having a native English language colleague or speaker read and help craft the paper before submission. This will likely increase the quality of the final product and therefore increase the likelihood of acceptance. If you do not know anyone to help with this, there are many editorial services that will now assist for a fee. Or email me for suggestions of editors that can help with this. At the end of the day, there is no secret to success. Attention to detail and a careful review of the language will hopefully improve your work.

Is The North Face worth your money?

05:33
In this Our Changing Climate environmental video essay, I look at the environmental actions of The North Face clothing. Specifically, I look at how The North Face seems to be torn between environmental actions and sustainability on the one hand and appeasing shareholders on the other. Ultimately, The North Face seems to follow the example of Patagonia and Fjällräven rather than challenging the outdoor industry to be environmentally ethical and sustainable leaders in their field. I Dressed Like It Was 1987

I styled 3 outfits inspired by the popular fashions of thirty years ago! From the hair metal rockers and groupies, to blazer-clad working ladies and teen pop idols decked out in acid wash jeans, I had a great time pretending it was 1987 and exploring fashion history through one of the most iconic decades - the 80s. Let me know what you think of my ~lookbook~ and if you want to see more of these! A huge thanks to Kayley Melissa for rocking out this 80s hair! Why women’s pockets suck

04:30
Women's minuscule pockets favor fashion over function – and it sucks. Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO It turns out that women went from having what some might call “superior” pockets to the ridiculously tiny versions we have today. We’ve been asking for better pockets since the beginning of the 20th century, but somehow, not much has changed. What’s the hold up? You can find The Pudding's pocket eye-opening sizing interactive – made by Jan Diehm and Amber Thomas – here: https://pudding.cool/2018/08/pockets/ If you liked this video, check out this article from Racked on the role of pockets during the suffrage movement: https://www.vox.com/2016/9/19/12865560/politics-of-pockets-suffragettes-women   And if you’re interested in the long history of women’s pockets you can check out: “The Pocket: A Hidden History of Women's Lives, 1660-1900” by Barbara Burman and Ariane Fennetaux (to be published by Yale University Press in 2019): https://yalebooks.yale.edu/book/9780300239072/pocket The Goods by Vox explains what we buy, why we buy it, and why it matters. History of Italian fashion | Wikipedia audio article

11:26
This is an audio version of the Wikipedia Article: History of Italian fashion Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago. Learning by listening is a great way to: - increases imagination and understanding - improves your listening skills - improves your own spoken accent - learn while on the move - reduce eye strain Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone. You can find other Wikipedia audio articles too at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuKfABj2eGyjH3ntPxp4YeQ In case you don't find one that you were looking for, put a comment. This video uses Google TTS en-US-Standard-D voice. SUMMARY ======= The history of Italian fashion is a chronological record of the events and people that impacted and evolved Italian fashion into what it is today. From the Middle Ages, Italian fashion has been popular internationally, with cities in Italy producing textiles like velvet, silk, and wool. During the Middle Ages and Renaissance, Italian fashion for both men and women was extravagant and expensive, but the fashion industry declined during the industrialization of Italy. Many modern Italian fashion brands were founded in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and in the 1950s and 1960s, Italian fashion regained popularity worldwide. While many clients of Italian fashion designers are celebrities, Italian fashion brands also focus on ready-to-wear clothes.

I Wore The Ugliest Jacket In The World For A Week

14:54
It's finally autumn! And so, for my next installment of "questionable fashion decisions", I wore the Y/Project Oversized Denim Jacket with super long sleeves, which many people have roasted on twitter and in articles. It's definitely one of the weirdest fashion trends of 2017! What do you guys think? Would you wear this? Is this the "ugliest jacket in the world"? To clarify: I never said I was actually returning it, I said "we'll see!" as a joke, knowing I've done a lot of stuff in it and implying that they would probably not let me return it. Over the years there have been several theories as to why this seemed to happen, from the women’s garb to simply conforming to societal expectations. Fast fashion is a major contributor to the world's clothing waste problem. This Medieval Roman Empire, today called the Byzantine Empire, began when Constantine, the first Christian emperor, moved Rome's capital. Leonora Neville details the rise and fall of the Byzantine Empire. Lesson by Leonora Neville, animation by Remus & Kiki. Thank you so much to our patrons for your support! Clothing in ancient Greece | Wikipedia audio article

11:10
This is an audio version of the Wikipedia Article: Clothing in ancient Greece Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. You can find other Wikipedia audio articles too at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuKfABj2eGyjH3ntPxp4YeQ You can upload your own Wikipedia articles through: https://github.com/nodef/wikipedia-tts "The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing." - Socrates SUMMARY ======= Clothing in ancient Greece primarily consisted of the chiton, peplos, himation, and chlamys. Ancient Greek men and women typically wore two pieces of clothing draped about the body: an undergarment (chiton or peplos) and a cloak (himation or chlamys). Ancient Greek clothing was mainly based on necessity, function, materials, and protection rather than identity. Thus, clothes were quite simple, draped, loose-fitting and free flowing. Customarily, clothing was homemade and cut to various lengths of rectangular linen or wool fabric with minimal cutting or sewing, and secured with ornamental clasps or pins, and a belt, or girdle (zone). Pieces were generally interchangeable between men and women. However, women usually wore their robes to their ankles while men generally wore theirs to their knees depending on the occasion and circumstance. While no clothes have survived from this period, descriptions exist in contemporary accounts and artistic depictions. Clothes were mainly homemade and locally made since trade with other cultures hadn't occurred yet. Additionally, clothing often served many purposes (such as bedding). All ancient Greek clothing was made out of natural fibers. Linen was the most common fabric due to the hot climate which lasted most of the year. On the rare occasion of colder weather, ancient Greeks wore wool. Common clothing of the time was plain white, or neutral colored, sometimes incorporating decorative borders. There is evidence of elaborate design and bright colors, but these were less common among lower class citizens. However, noble citizens wore bright colors to express their wealth as dyed clothing was more expensive. The clothing for both men and women generally consisted of two main parts: a tunic and a cloak. The Greeks had a great appreciation for the human body, and it was shown in their fashion. The fabric was expertly draped around the body, and the cloth could be slightly transparent. Males had no problem with nudity, while women could only be naked in the public bath. The Greeks also influence modern fashion quite frequently, especially in todays globalized world. Modern big name brands such as Zuhair Murad, Dolce and Gabbana, Gucci, Chanel, and Versace have taken elements from Greek clothing for their ready-to-wear and couture collections today. Most notably, Gianni Versace famously used Ancient Greek inspiration and motifs in his collection. In fact, his entire branding is based on Greek culture. The logo for Versace is of the Ancient Greek monster Medusa's head encircled in the traditional meander pattern symbolizing eternity. Dolce and Gabbana also did a collection inspired by Greek temples and ruins. Additionally, the notorious fashion house Chanel devoted their entire Resort 2018 collection to ancient Greece with references to ancient clothing, gods/goddesses, architecture and culture. In addition to using Greek silhouettes and clothing styles, Chanel staged the show in ancient Greek ruins, providing a theatric and refined experience for their audience. Chanel’s creative director Karl Lagerfeld is quoted by Vogue editor Luke Leitch, “The criteria of beauty in Ancient then Classical Greece still holds true. There have never been more beautiful representations of women. Or more beautiful column. The entire Renaissance, in fact, was based on antiquity." Unmistakably, the designer has an adoration for ancient Greek culture as he implements it in his personal designs and style. It is quite evident that, the drapery, architecture, and mythology from ancient Greece had a great influence on fashion since then, and still today.

Articles of Style: Custom Menswear Made in America

02:20
Articles of Style (formerly The Style Blogger) was launched in 2009 and quickly became the most popular menswear blog in the world, with millions of readers in more than 150 countries. Since then AOS has been featured in GQ, Esquire, Men’s Health, Playboy, Complex, Sports Illustrated, The New York Times, The BBC, The Today Show, and many others. Founded by “America’s Best Dressed Man” Dan Trepanier, the original goal of the site was simple; to make fashion easier and more relatable for “real guys”. Dan spent several years researching, buying, wearing and reviewing menswear made by just about every brand in the business, from high-end bespoke to cheap “fast fashion“. It was an unending quest to find the perfect brand; one that combines quality craftsmanship, ethical manufacturing, timeless design, expert fittings for any body type, and personal wardrobe planning that could help his audience of “real guys” dress with style and confidence – with minimal effort and lasting results. Frustrated with the the market, and encouraged by his loyal supporters, Dan went back to school to study menswear design, spent 3 years apprenticing with a bespoke tailor in NYC, and put together an all-star team to turn his acclaimed blog into a full-service menswear destination that combines quality products with quality service and provides real-life inspiration that goes beyond cloth and touches on the lifestyle of the modern gentleman. In October of 2015 AOS launched their online custom menswear shop. Overnight they became the only e-commerce brand to provide real fittings with real tailors, to make all of their garments here in America, and to provide personal styling services to gentlemen from anywhere in the world. AOS now has clients as far a part as Canada, Brazil, Japan, Germany, and Dubai – the majority of whom have re-ordered and begun building long-term wardrobes. Most importantly, AOS teaches their clients to invest in quality craftsmanship, cut-down on wasteful consumption, and use the act of dressing with respect to influence the world around them. To learn more about AOS, check out how it works, read client reviews, and get started by filling out your very own AOS account. Don't Try Doing These 15 Things in Other Countries

09:04
Every country has its own laws, traditions, rules, and specific features that might seem weird to the people of other cultures. So when going on a trip, you'd better learn information about the etiquette rules and traditions of the country you're going to visit. For example, you can’t buy or sell chewing gum in Singapore. And that’s just one of many places that have things you should never do and that totally go against what might be normal for you or me. Other videos you might like: 12 Strange Behaviors That Are Normal in Other Countries https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbSe19LTdn4& 10 Crazy Things That Seem Hot in Foreign Countries https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Z9P9Y7BKw8& 10 Countries That Have Extremely Different Concepts of Male Beauty https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vf_wBKnhKFM& TIMESTAMPS: No latte after breakfast 0:24 Tip? That's bad manners! 1:02 Chewing gum is illegal 1:30 ... as well as cutting down a saguaro cactus 2:12 Bikini is just for the beach 2:52 Don't be rude, leave a bite or two left on your plate 3:32 Never blow your nose out in public 3:57 How to avoid offending a taxi driver 4:25 Only buy flowers in even numbers 4:54 Don’t get too creative with baby names 5:18 Avoid using your left hand 5:53 Don’t feed the pigeons 6:29 Are you a high heels lover? Not in this country! 6:55 The fashion police do exist 7:25 Don’t step on money 7:58 Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: - In Italy, it’s considered uncouth to order white coffee - or any coffee made with milk - after breakfast time. This is because traditionally in Italy, drinking milk after a meal is thought to be bad for digestion. - In Japan, great customer service is the normal standard, not something a waiter can just choose to do if they want a little extra money. - You can’t buy or sell chewing gum in Singapore. This ban started back in 1992 as a way to clean up Singapore’s streets, movie theatres, schools, and parks. - The saguaro cactus is Arizona’s official state flower. Don’t cut it down, unless you wanna face up to a 25-year prison sentence. - Unless you’re on or somewhere near the sandy beaches of Barcelona, wearing a bikini is a huge no-no in this colorful Catalonian city. - Gobbling up every last morsel on your plate isn’t necessarily illegal in China, but it is considered somewhat rude. - If you’re fighting a cold, allergies, or just some really bitter winter winds, sometimes blowing your nose in public just has to happen. But if you’re in France, try to make it to the bathroom before you blow that honker of yours. - In Australia, hopping into the backseat instead of the front passenger seat is pretty rude. Basically, you’ll look like a snob who wants to be chauffeured in stark silence instead of making small talk with the driver up front. - Giving someone a dozen roses or flowers in even numbers is considered a major faux pas in Russia because even-numbered flower bouquets are usually present at funerals. - In India, using your left hand while exchanging money, handing over food, or shaking a person’s hand is considered incredibly rude and, well, really gross. - Feeding pigeons some breadcrumbs may seem harmless, but doing this in Venice can set you back anywhere from 70-700 bucks if you’re caught! - You definitely don’t want to be caught wearing camouflage in several of the Caribbean Islands. It’s because their police officers wear camo. - Don’t step on money in Thailand. On baht, you’ll find the face of the country’s reigning monarch. Stepping on these faces is a big no-no here and is considered demeaning to the royal family. The Plastic Age: A Documentary feat. Pharrell Williams (Full Film)

17:45
We all talk about the Stone Age, the Iron Age and the Bronze Age, but what era are we living in right now? People are starting to refer to us as the - far less romantic - Plastic Age. We make 288 million tonnes of plastic a year, and unlike paper, metal, glass or wood, it does not oxidise or biodegrade, instead it ends up in our oceans, making the ratio of plastic to plankton 100:1. The way to make use of The Great Pacific Garbage Patch? Bionic yarn. Co-designed by Pharrell, G-Star’s RAW for the Oceans collection is the world’s first denim line created from plastic that has been fished out of the big blue and recycled. Find out how we can pick 700,000 tonnes of plastic up off the sea floor in our documentary, made possible by G-Star, The Plastic Age. If you like our films, take a look at our shop (we ship worldwide): https://goo.gl/yZOzTc FURTHER READING “Society takes the business of making money very seriously indeed. Much of our education system is geared towards giving people the skills to get a good job and a steady income. By contrast, very little attention is given to how to spend money well – by which we mean, in ways that stand a chance of properly increasing our sense of well-being and therefore justifying the sacrifices that went into earning the cash. The very subject sounds slightly absurd. Surely there is no challenge here, other than making sure we have enough (by which we mean, ever more) in our wallets....” You can read more on this and other topics on our blog TheBookofLife.org at this link: https://goo.gl/RIjF6W MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Our website has classes, articles and products to help you think and grow: https://goo.gl/d0sWIR Watch more films on CAPITALISM in our playlist: http://bit.ly/2dmGWsp Do you speak a different language to English? The surprising pattern behind color names around the world

Why so many languages invented words for colors in the same order. Help us make more ambitious videos by joining the Vox Video Lab. It gets you exclusive perks, like livestream Q&As with all the Vox creators, a badge that levels up over time, and video extras bringing you closer to our work! Learn more at http://bit.ly/video-lab In 1969, two Berkeley researchers, Paul Kay and Brent Berlin, published a book on a pretty groundbreaking idea: that every culture in history, when they developed their languages, invented words for colors in the exact same order. They claimed to know this based off of a simple color identification test, where 20 respondents identified 330 colored chips by name. If a language had six words, they were always black, white, red, green, yellow, and blue. If it had four terms, they were always black, white, red, and then either green or yellow. If it had only three, they were always black, white, and red , and so on. The theory was revolutionary — and it shaped our understanding of how color terminologies emerge. Clothing in ancient Rome | Wikipedia audio article

40:37
This is an audio version of the Wikipedia Article: Clothing in ancient Rome Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. You can find other Wikipedia audio articles too at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuKfABj2eGyjH3ntPxp4YeQ You can upload your own Wikipedia articles through: https://github.com/nodef/wikipedia-tts "The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing." - Socrates SUMMARY ======= Clothing in ancient Rome generally comprised a short-sleeved or sleeveless, knee-length tunic for men and boys, and a longer, usually sleeved tunic for women and girls. On formal occasions, adult male citizens could wear a woolen toga, draped over their tunic, and married citizen women wore a woolen mantle, known as a palla, over a stola, a simple, long-sleeved, voluminous garment that hung to midstep. Clothing, footwear and accoutrements identified gender, status, rank and social class, and thus offered a means of social control. This was probably most apparent in the segregation of seating tiers at public theatres, games and festivals, and in the distinctive, privileged official dress of magistrates, priesthoods and the military. The toga was considered Rome's "national costume" but for day-to-day activities, most Romans preferred more casual, practical and comfortable clothing; the tunic, in various forms, was the basic garment for all classes, both sexes and most occupations. It was usually made of linen, and was augmented as necessary with underwear, or with various kinds of cold-or-wet weather wear, such as knee-breeches for men, and cloaks, coats and hats. In colder parts of the empire, full length trousers were worn. Most urban Romans wore shoes, slippers, boots or sandals of various types; in the countryside, some wore clogs. Most clothing was simple in structure and basic form, and its production required minimal cutting and tailoring, but all was produced by hand and every process required skill, knowledge and time. Spinning and weaving were thought virtuous, frugal occupations for Roman women of all classes. Wealthy matrons, including Augustus' wife Livia, might show their traditionalist values by producing home-spun clothing, but most men and women who could afford it bought their clothing from specialist artisans. Relative to the overall basic cost of living, even simple clothing was expensive, and was recycled many times down the social scale. Rome's governing elite produced laws designed to limit public displays of personal wealth and luxury. None were particularly successful, as the same wealthy elite had an appetite for luxurious and fashionable clothing. Exotic fabrics were available, at a price; silk damasks, translucent gauzes, cloth of gold, and intricate embroideries; and vivid, expensive dyes such as saffron yellow or Tyrian purple. Not all dyes were costly, however, and most Romans wore colourful clothing. Clean, bright clothing was a mark of respectability and status among all social classes. The fastenings and brooches used to secure garments such as cloaks provided further opportunities for personal embellishment and display.
